Thanksgiving is a time of year when we all reflect on what we’re thankful for. This year, our American Training family kicked off the season of gratitude with the annual Highfields Thanksgiving Party, a tradition we’re all very thankful for!
Our annual Highfields Thanksgiving Party fell on the Thursday before Thanksgiving. Many community members joined our families, youth (graduates and current), providers and community partners for a buffet style Thanksgiving meal, dessert, coffee and good company!
While dedicated Colleagues cooked much of the meal, turkeys were donated and brought in by the Wyndham Hotel. A turkey carving by the hotel’s Executive Chef kicked off the party, which lasted for hours.
The day was filled with delicious food, good company, great conversation, and even a few performances. A former Highfields resident shared her vocal talents, singing for the crowd, while Colleague Ya Rath offered a musical performance on his unique instruments; a Cambodian krapeu and a khim.
“Today was excellent,” said Renee Ghembaza, Program Director of Highfields. “We had a great turnout. We really appreciate the support from the community, our Colleagues, our families, the Department of Mental Health and the Department of Children and Families.”
“I think everyone looks forward to coming to see familiar faces, eat great food, share great company, and take a pause from their daily routines and expectations in their own lives,” she added.

Our 2014 LIFE Matters Awards winners were celebrated with smiles at our annual LIFE Matters Awards Gala! We saved lots of airfare and transported our friends across the pond with an evening of fine dining, entertainment, and awards in London, the theme of this year’s Gala.
We brought London to life October 17th at DiBurro’s Function Facility in Haverhill with favorite British celebrities, characters, and even a few royals! Visitors stopped by our WOW! London hotspots like the Tower of Yumdon, a cupcake tower, and Candelot, our land of candy.
A fabulous band filled the posh evening with Brit tunes, making the trip more memorable.
Our LIFE Matters awards Gala, our only major annual fundraiser, was a WOW! evening where we celebrated our Partners and gave them the opportunity to enhance the lives of our Guests, Residents and Students.
Our proud 2014 winners were Injured Workers Pharmacy as Company of the Year, Chase & Lunt at Vendor of the Year, and Market Basket associates as the LIFE Matters Award winner!

At American Training the terms dignity and respect are a two-way street. When one of our Colleagues read about the less than favorable conditions that existed at the Bellevue Cemetery in Lawrence, she knew there was a way we could give back.
The very next day we had a team of Guests out there volunteering. Those interested in learning about landscaping quickly signed up to participate and spent the day raking, picking up trash and making the cemetery look beautiful.
The work was worth it. They had fun. They were together. And, most of all, they made a difference in their community and in the lives of those with loved ones at the cemetery, by returning dignity and respect to all resting peacefully at Bellevue Cemetery.
Their upbeat attitudes and hard work were recognized by the cemetery’s small staff, who asked them to return. They now bring the WOW! Magic to Bellevue Cemetery twice a week and will continue to do so throughout this fall.

Around here, Tie Dye Day & Carnivale is known as a day for indulging in sunshine, friends, food, fabulous colors, and lots of fun. And, this year’s event lived up to all the expectations.
The savory smell of hotdogs and hamburgers wafted through the June air as Guests, Students, Residents and Colleagues danced the day away.
Zumba classes, a live disc jockey, a balloonist, a dunk tank, an ice cream truck and carnival games galore added to the fun of the WOW! afternoon which featured local and nationally renowned speed painting artist Rob Surette.
Known for his inspirational performances, Surette painted change-making figures from history like Martin Luther King, Jr., Abraham Lincoln, and Mother Theresa. He encouraged each member of the audience to work to create the change he or she would like to see in the world and concluded the performance by gifting us a custom-made American Training Tie Dye Day and Carnivale painting.
All-in-all, our big American Training family enjoyed the time together and dyed more than 300 t-shirts!
